Rating: G
Spoilers: After "Serenity", some allusion to the ending of the movie
The ship hummed and strummed into her, leaching into her pores like wine. It whispered to her about the dark places and the cold…cradled her, rocked her to sleep when the nightmares came. From her bunk it sounded like the low, rumble of a big cat when it senses danger it can’t see, except when Kaylee was there, in the engine room. It purred then, arching itself into her hands.
Kaylee was in Simon’s room though, doing some purring of her own, so the ship thrummed along, all low growl and steady pace through the dark. River turned on her bunk, turning away from the sounds of her brother’s thoughts and Kaylee’s laughter.
Restless, she stepped out of her bunk, bare feet against the cold metal plates. The ship seems to notice, slips a little to the side as if to greet her, before resuming its rumbling path forward.
The captain is on the bridge, nearly asleep in his seat. His thoughts are as loud as Simon’s…and she turns from them with a smile. Zoe is in her bunk, alone. The tears have stopped, but the pain leaks out into the hallway until Serenity absorbs it, cycles it through to come out again as a warm embrace that includes them all, even Jayne, asleep and snoring in his bunk, dreaming about his mother and a really big gun.
River closes her eyes and breathes it in, the feeling of belonging…to this ship, to these people…
