Summary: Pre-Series AU. Sam sometimes reminds John of his mother. When John sees more than a resemblance, he lets himself believe something that can't possibly be true. Sam pays the price.

A/Ns: This story ocurred to me late the other night, and festered. I thought, what if John was deluded and believed that Mary could manifest in Sam? Why my brain thinks these things, I'll never know. But being my brain, it didn't stop there. The whole story spun out in my head over the following 24 hours until I had no choice but to write it just to get it out of my head. This is sad and painful.
