)Gun oil. Some days it underlies everything. It gets on the sheets when Dean cleans the guns on the bed. It fills the Impala when he tosses the rag into the back seat. It clings to Deans fingers for hours after. He almost finds it comforting. Almost.

)Ozone. Sometimes it means that rain is coming. More often than not it means a spirit or ghost or something else supernatural has come calling. Left the smell behind like a marker, a territorial claim. It raises the hackles, sets him on edge.

3) Sulfur. It goes beyond thenormal supernatural stuff. It notches everything up. This is where the bad boys come to play, where rock salt and bullets are meaningless. It’s the smell that tells him they might not make it out of this one in one piece. But that’s okay. He’ll settle for breathing.

)Blood. There’s been enough of it. He can smell it now, sometimes before he even knows its there. The flat copper tang in the back of his throat is nearly as much taste as it is smell. He doesn’t tell Dean that he can tell the difference when it’s his blood. Or how he knows when it’s serious. But he does.

)Dean. Its part sweat, part that manly soap he insists on having, part…something else. He’s never really sure, except that it’s Dean. And he wonders sometimes how he ever lived for two years without smelling that…or what he would do if…but it’s Dean…and he breathes deep, filling his senses with that smell before he lets himself fall asleep, because it didn’t matter where they were. That smell made it right. Made it home.
