wandereringray asked so nicely. Am & I challenged each other to write something non-angsty because everything we touched or discussed was turning into misery and pain. This is my end result. Go here to see what she came up with (especially if you need a good laugh because it is funny). Thank you to Am for the beta.
Dana is 12 / Ari is 3
Snuggled under a down comforter in the recliner pulled close to the fireplace - Sam and Aristotle. Ari was curled in an impossibly little ball over Sam's lap.
February 1st. Frigid outside, though the promised snow still hadn't fallen. Sam woke in the early morning hours and had retreated to the living room around 3 a.m. He built the fire, made coffee and grabbed a book. He nodded off around 6ish after adding more logs to generate more warmth.
He hadn't even heard Dean or Dana as they left for work and school. Sam awoke again around 9 to Ari looking up at him, her head on his stomach, her big brown eyes sleepy and content. He reached and petted her soft, perfect head, scratched her ears. She gave him a big lab smile in return. "Hey gal. You want some breakfast?"
He received an image from her of lazy/tired/stay.
"You okay? Since when do you want to stay laying around at this hour?"
Again, a hazy dog image evoking lazy or something else, vague though.
"What're you trying to tell me Ari?" Sam felt a niggling concern. This wasn't normal for her. She'd lay around with him when he felt unwell for days on end but, at the first indication of any Sam activity, she'd spring up and bound around in a circle, raring to go. For her to not want to move when he did was very non-Ari behavior.
Sam held her head in his hands and focused. The image from her was again lazy or could be tired and a clear feeling of different and maybe some component of doggie nerves.
"Ok, we're going to the vet."
Sam swore she looked at him with horror in her eyes. Or maybe it was betrayal. Then she leaped out of his lap and scooted her butt upstairs. He knew exactly where he'd find her, buried in Dana's bed, under the blankets. Whenever she was naughty or Dean yelled, she always hid in Dana's bed, the kids sticking together or something.
Sam pushed himself up and out of the chair, headed to the kitchen and reached for the phone.
That Evening
Dean walked into the kitchen and pulled off his coat and gloves, slammed the door behind him to shut out the cold.
Sam closed the oven door and glanced up at him, drinking in Dean's admiring look.
Dean's smile broadened and he asked, "Feeling better?"
Sam nodded and leaned his lanky body against the stove enjoying the warmth and allowing his shirt to creep up, giving Dean an eyeful of ripped abs. "Yeah, thanks for rebuilding the fire before you left. I slept until 9."
Dean rubbed his hand over his mouth and grinned appreciatively. Dean opened the refrigerator, reached for a couple of beers and closed the door. Opened them both, passed one to Sam.
"I took Ari to the vet today."
Dean chugged from his bottle and wrinkled his brow. "Why?"
"Puppies." Sam turned his back to Dean and drank from his bottle and listened to Dean choke on his next swallow of beer. After Dean almost ceased coughing, he muttered, "You gotta be joking, right?" Then he pleaded, "Please tell me you're joking."
"They'll be here in about four weeks." Sam turned back around, Dean was sitting in a chair. The smile was gone, replaced with a decided frown.
"How?"
Sam smirked. "Well Dean, Ari found a beaux and seduced him, probably using her feminine wiles and…"
"Smart ass. So not funny. You never let her roam, how?"
Sam shrugged. "Dunno. Should've had her fixed, I guess. But, puppies will be fun. Dana'll be thrilled."
"FUN? It'll be a mess and they'll chew and cry and pee all over. And bug the crap out of me. And Dana? Lord. Dana will want to keep them all. Christ almighty!" Dean threw up his hands and stomped out of the room. Sam heard his voice as he headed down the hall. "Just keep them away from me."
Sam muttered to Aristotle as she peeked around the corner, "That went well."
4 weeks later
"Where is my green shirt?" Dean was digging through his dresser drawer.
"Aristotle has it," Sam replied from within the bathroom, obviously with a mouthful of toothpaste.
"Your fucking dog has my green shirt?" Dean yelled at him.
Sam walked out into the bedroom, toothbrush in hand. "You know babe, I would take your aggravation with Ari and her puppies a lot more seriously if she hadn't been in your lap last night while you stroked her and assured her over and over that everything would be fine."
Dean pulled out his gray shirt and pulled it over his head. "Saw that huh?"
Dana came flying the doorway. "Where is she? Where is she?" The girl was vibrating, practically giving off an electrical current and making her hair stand on end.
"Calm down Dana, you're going to make things fly around. Calm." Dean said in a soft and deliberate tone.
"She's in my closet, asleep," Sam pointed to the closed door.
Dana bounced and shook her head. "The puppies are coming."
Sam didn't even ask how she knew, just walked across the room and opened the door. Ari was nestled in her box, buried under a pile of t-shirts, all shapes and sizes. Two weeks ago, she had started pulling shirts out of the laundry. Took two of Sam's first, then one of Dana's and then two of Dean's. Every single one she stole was green.
"I'll call the vet," Dean said.
"No, not necessary. I can help her if she needs it," Sam answered as he lowered himself to the ground.
Dana crossed her arms defiantly. "I'm not going to school Dad."
"Did I say you had to?" Dean asked her, raising his eyebrows.
Sam turned. "Will you two hush? Bring her water bowl up and I could use some coffee. Dana, you can stay but you have to try to be calm. Can you do that sweetie?"
Sam looked at her. He saw her exhale, reign in her powers, lock them down. She stood up straight and nodded to him. "Good girl, come in then."
Dana crawled into the closet. "Hi Ari. I can't wait to see your puppies. Find out if Tony or Rogue is the dad."
Sam petted Ari. "You're gonna be fine," he reassured.
Dean came back into the room, passed the water bowl to Sam and then a steaming mug. He sat down next to Dana. "You're staying?" Sam asked.
"Yeah, don't say a word."
An Hour Later
They were all still sitting there, waiting, Ari's head laying in Sam's lap and Dana's in Dean's.
A small greenish sac started to emerge. Dana whispered, "Sammy, that isn't a puppy. Is she having an alien?"
'No sweetie. That's normal. Puppy will follow shortly."
Ari whined, Sam stroked her head, murmured encouragement.
And then they saw a little nose, then two ears and plop! The first puppy came out. Dana went to reach for it and Sam clucked his disapproval. Ari looked up at Sam with her big brown eyes. "You want me to clean him for you?"
Sam swore Ari nodded.
Sam took one of the towels and reached down to remove all the membrane covering his face and clear the mucus from his mouth and nose. He could feel his little soft breaths. After a minute, the pup cried, long and mournful. Sam put him down near Ari who severed the umbilical cord. "Good girl," Sam said.
Dana clung to Dean, wide-eyed, repeating quietly, "Oh Daddy, Oh Sammy, Oh Daddy, Oh Sammy."
Sam stroked Ari's head as she used her nose to nudge the black pup close to her body. Dana started vibrating, the excitement too much. Dean stroked her head. "Get it under control honey."
It was only about ten minutes before number two arrived. She emerged hindquarters first, placenta already broken. Chocolate, like her mother. This one squirmed and cried immediately, raising an almighty fuss. Ari reached down and cleaned this one herself, looking up at Sam as if to ask if she was doing okay. Sam just stroked her and cooed his approval.
The final puppy, the runt, emerged thirty minutes later, completely still. Sam felt Ari's uncertain reaction. Sam scooped her up into a fresh towel and brushed his thumbs against her belly, softly. She didn't flinch. Sam felt his gut clench. He kept rubbing, willing the pup to breath. Then, at last, she gave a little squeal of a cry. Everyone in the closet exhaled as one. Sam put her down and Ari cleaned her up and placed her next to the other two.
"So, it was Tony," Dana murmured in a sub-whisper. Tony was the champion black lab from across the alleyway. "I knew Aristotle had quality taste."
Indeed, all three pups looked like pure bred labs. Ari had chosen well. Tony was an AKC champion, a field trial champion and hunting certified. Combine his stud self with Ari's seeming psychic ability and these were three very special pups.
Ari looked at them, seemed to say thank you. She inched her puppies closer and closed her eyes. "We should let the new mommy get some sleep." Sam said, inching backward.
"I want to stay." Dana whined.
"Let's go get some ice cream." Dean said. "Sam's right, she needs her rest."
Dean helped Dana up and sent her pouting out of the room before leaning down and helping Sam to his feet. Sam groaned, the hard floor and snug position had been hell on his body. Sam rested his weight on Dean as he steadied himself, pulled him close for a kiss then said, "I'll buy you a new green shirt."
Dean tried to pretend to grouse, but could tell that it wasn't going to fly. Instead, he kissed Sam back. "Come on, Dana's too pumped up - we need to save the furniture before she destroys it."
Sam nodded, and took a last moment to check on Aristotle. He read tired and that ever-present sense of love that was innately her. She and her brood were going to be just fine.
