The others will not understand. She knows that. She accepts that.

“Ah, Teyla, there you are.”

She turns, smiles. “Colonel Sheppard, all settled?”

He nods, his face more serious than she remembers seeing it. “You’re all set. You need anything, company?”

“Thank you, I will be quite fine on my own. I have traded with these people before. They do not welcome strangers.”

“You’ll be gone what, two days?”

She smiles again, knowing she would not be coming back. “It is hard to say, Colonel. Each negotiation is unique.”

"Well, don't dawdle. Rodney will find a way. I know he will."

It is their last chance. Food supplies are nearly depleted. The Wraith are coming, only days away and the people of Atlantis are worn thin. With the remaining power at their disposal they can barely keep the city running, let alone use the shield or cloaking device to defend themselves.

The Morzii have one thing that Atlantis needs more than anything.

What they wanted in return…Teyla forces herself to look him in the eye. He believes she was negotiating with them for shelter, for the safety of her people. She would let him believe that. If he knew the truth…well, she isn’t sure exactly how he would react.

There would be anger, for certain. That she’s known all this time of a place to find not one but two ZPM modules and has never spoken of it. There would be a rush to run in and get what they need, whatever the cost. But Teyla knows the cost of anything the Morzii have. She had seen the rituals when she was still a young woman, before the leadership of her people had fallen to her.

The Morzii were a superstitious people, with rites and rituals that guided their every day existence and a price to be paid for everything. She waits for the tech to dial the Stargate and offers a nod to Colonel Sheppard. When she does not return he will find the note she has left him in her quarters, explaining what she has done and why.

Teyla does not expect him to understand. Still, she longs for the moment for a more personal goodbye. She has come to see him as a friend.

Her gait falters when Ronon appears, his eyes watching her like he knows. He does not stop her though and she steps through the gate, pausing on the other side to lift her head and hands, showing that she is unarmed.

The men appear, weapons trained on her, and she waits until the leader shows himself. Then, she bows, her eyes meeting his and not blinking. “I am Teyla Emmagan. You are expecting me.”

She had sent word two days before, with her terms.

The leader nods and beckons her closer.

In this moment there are no choices, no amazing rescues on the way, no way out. In this moment there is only her life and the offering of it. Beside the dialing device there is a sled filled with bags of food and the two ZPMs.

"When you have proven yourself worthy." The leader takes her hand, leads her through the labyrinthine path away from the gate. Here too is ritual. She will be bathed and fed and prayed over and come the morning, they would walk her once more to the gate.

Her life would be offered to the gods of the great circle, and when they had taken her, they would send the sled through and Atlantis would survive.
