Characters: General: Jack/Daniel, Dr. Lee
Prompt: table 2, # 007 Relief
Word Count: 604

This is a part of the series developing here. I seem to be jumping all over chronologically. The right order to read them at this point is: Trust, Staying Alive, Enigma, Stay, Kissing, A Taste of Daniel, The Truth of it, Sated Silence, Lunch, Contentment and Lost
The ratings move between PG-13 and NC-17, for sex and violence.

Tired. Run.
The two thoughts conflicted, but Daniel kept moving, drawing the mercenaries away from where Dr. Lee hid, moving madly through underbrush with no idea where he was going, only that when he stopped he would be dead.
He wondered, as he crashed into a tree and spun around it, if Jack even knew they were in trouble. How long had they been gone?
“Focus,” he told himself, pushing off the tree to keep moving. They were close. Very close.
Daniel screamed as the bullet tore through his leg, pitching forward, his hands catching on the tree in front of him as he collapsed to the ground.
Fight.
He was as good as dead. He knew it. Yet, his hand sought around him for a weapon, anything to defend himself. Even before looking up he knew he was surrounded. The rock in his hand was heavy. He could barely lift it.
Gunfire.
Instinctively Daniel covered his face, as though his arms alone would save him from the guns in front of him. He held his breath, but nothing happened.
“Daniel.”
He flinched, the hand with the rock coming up defensively.
The voice registered and Daniel blinked, lifting his head. “How many more?”
“Jack?” He was hallucinating. He was probably dying, just hadn’t realized it yet.
“Daniel.”
Jack’s hand touched his knee. His face was filled with concern, his eyes marking every visible wound. “What are you doing here?” Daniel asked, confused, his eyes darting up to sweep around them for his pursuers.
“How many?”
“Ah,…you got them all.”
He looked from Jack to the rock in his hand. It looked ridiculous. He shook his head, trying to figure out what he should be feeling. Jack was there. How? Why? Daniel let the rock fall from his hand and reached out to touch Jack, making sure he was real. It didn’t feel real.
Then, Jack’s hand was wrapped around his wrist, helping him to his feet. He groaned as the pain lanced through his thigh, breathing heavy. He nearly fell back to the ground as Jack whirled around to face the rising, roaring warrior charging at them, his face contorted by rage. Jack fired repeatedly to no avail, and Daniel was ready to concede to the inevitable when the roar was silenced by grenade and Jack was once more assessing his condition.
He wanted to fall into Jack’s arms and sleep, or maybe kiss him until he could feel his body as more than one giant, oozing wound. He looked from Jack to Burke and back, his mind a mush of emotion and fear and confusion. Jack’s face was filled with worry and determination. Daniel closed his eyes and steadied himself on his shoulder. “Why don’t you check the area, make sure there aren’t any more.” Jack said to Burke who responded with the tilt of his chin, check of his weapon and a jog into the trees.
As he vanished from sight, Jack pulled Daniel closer, hugging him tightly. “I keep telling you, you have to stop getting into these situations,” he whispered and Daniel could feel a sense of relief wafting off of him. Relief.
Daniel breathed deeply of it, welcoming the calm, the sense of purpose. Jack was there. Jack had come for him. As it settled in, he also started to regain a sense of himself. There was the artifact to recover, and deactivate…and Dr. Lee…
Daniel stood up, half stepping away from Jack. “Dr. Lee,” he offered in explanation and Jack nodded. There would be time for personal comforts later. For now, it was enough that Daniel was safe.
